Prof. Martin Buber (1878-1965)

Philosopher and Zionist activist, one of the great Jewish intellectuals of the 20th century and promoter of the establishment of the Hebrew University.  Forced to leave Germany in the 1930s, he joined the university’s faculty. A scholar of Jewish philosophy and Hassidism, strove to further the study of humanities at the university.

Prof. Martin Buber

Prof. Zvi Hermann Shapira (1840-1898)

Professor of mathematics and initiator of the concept of the Jewish National Fund. In the 1880s, he proposed the establishment of a Jewish cultural institution that would teach various academic disciplines in the Land of Israel. This proposal was presented at the First Zionist Congress in 1897.

Prof. Zvi Hermann Shapira

Dr. Chaim Weizmann (1874-1952)

Scientist, statesman and outstanding figure among the Zionist leaders who strove for the establishment of the Hebrew University.  Chairman of the university’s board of governors until his election as the Israel’s first president. Viewed establishing a scientific institution in Jerusalem as a central element in realizing the intellectual Zionist dream in the spirit of Ahad Ha’am.

Dr. Chaim Weizmann

Dr. Berthold Feivel (1875-1937)

An early and prominent Zionist activist and one of the members of the Democratic Fraction party in the Zionist movement, he published together with Dr. Chaim Weizmann and Prof. Martin Buber the booklet, “Eine Judische Hochschule, one of the documents that served as the basis for the establishment of the Hebrew University.
